Detecting metabolic disorders with sensors

Dairy cows are often plagued with ketosis as a result of the negative energy balance in early lactation. But is it possible to detect ketosis, and other metabolic diseases, with new sensor technologies?

This new 4D4F video describes how you can monitor transition cows with DeLaval's Herd Navigator, which measures BHB in milk (i.e. a ketone body used to assess the degree of ketosis). CowManager’s ear tag is also discussed, and how it measures rumination which can be used to monitor treatment for ketosis, likewise, Ivan Shepherd from Hilltop Farm in Cheshire talks about how he uses the SCR Heatime HR rumination levels to monitor his herd. Finally, Jacob Molenar, a Dutch dairy farmer working with a weigh cell, discusses how he uses the technology to monitor the weight of high yielding cows, and treatment them when necessary, to limit their milk production.
